School SCRABBLE® has been a popular competitive activity in the United States since 1998, when the National SCRABBLE Association and its community of Scrabble tournament enthusiasts adapted the game for school-age children. It has grown since then to the point where the annual U.S. National School SCRABBLE Championship (NSSC) attracts about 100 players, and has been televised on ESPN. Its success in the classroom draws on the wide range of literacy and numeracy skills necessary to master the game, the social skills fostered by two-player team play, and the opportunity for children to measure those skills in safe competition.
After the success of the first two Toronto School SCRABBLE® Championships, the parents and teachers who belong to the Toronto SCRABBLE Club (the largest and oldest SCRABBLE club in North America) are organizing an even bigger and better event this year. This year’s Grade 5–8 winner will again receive free entry into the U.S. Nationals, to be held at the Royal Pacific Resort in Orlando, FL on April 15–16, 2011.

The Championship will be held on Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 at Bessborough Drive Elementary & Middle School, at 211 Bessborough Drive, in Leaside, southeast of Bayview and Eglinton. Teams must arrive during the registration period between 09:30 A.M. and 10:00 A.M. in order to compete in the first round of play.
Players compete in two-player teams, must either currently be enrolled in Grade 4–12 or if homeschooled be of the right age to be enrolled in those grades. Please note that players in Grade 4 or Grades 9–12 are not eligible to play in the U.S. NSSC.
For this year’s event, registration will be limited to six players from each school until the February 25th registration deadline. If a school wants to send more than six players, additional players will be added to a waiting list and accepted on a space-available basis after the deadline.
An entry form is available online. Please complete one for each school, and send it with a $10 entry fee per pair of players to Vera Bigall, Bessborough Drive Elementary & Middle School, 211 Bessborough Drive, Toronto ON M4G 3K2, no later than February 25th, 2011.
Please make sure you have read our Coaches’ Notes before you arrive at the tournament.
If your school does not already have a School SCRABBLE Club, it’s easy to set one up, and we’ll help you. You can find a lot of resources online by clicking on the NSA School SCRABBLE link at the top of this page; and we can also match you up with one of our volunteers who can offer a series of Scrabble lessons for your class or club, or to teach the basics of the game. If you’re interested in this, please contact Vera Bigall at Bessborough School, (416) 396-2315.
Find out which of your students are interested in representing your school at the Championship, and be sure to send in their registration before the February 25th deadline.
On the day of the event, please arrive between 09:30 A.M. and 10:00 A.M., so that we can be sure that everyone is present in time for the start of the first round. If you are delayed en route, please call John Chew at his cellphone, (416) 876-7675. Players must be accompanied by a responsible adult, and must bring their own bagged lunches to eat during the half-hour lunch break. We can provide playing equipment (boards, tiles, tile bags, racks, timers, pencil, paper); please let us know if you are able to bring your own gear or need us to loan it. We also have for sale a limited number of game timers, if you would like to buy one for your students to practice with before the championship.
